The first thing you should decide when buying a wall clock is what size to get. The larger wall clocks can be anywhere from the two to four feet range. This obviously requires some open wall space. A clock this size will be quite stunning and draw the eye but be careful that there is not too much going on in the room otherwise you could get a cluttered result. If you have the space, a bright or colorful clock that carefully mixes well with the rooms theme can really draw some attention and become a conversation piece.
Color. In my experience decorating, it is best to stick to traditional colors for traditional objects. Plain colors or natural tones are generally safe, or otherwise ensure that at least one color area of the clock matches one of the dominant colors in the room (i.e. white walls will blend smoothly with a white face, even if the clock surround is another color).
We are all familiar with the indoor wall-clock as decorative and useful addition to virtual any room in our homes and offices. What we may not realize is that clocks make great outdoor decorative pieces too. The minimum requirement for a worthy clock is that it is weather proof, or at least water resistant. Water resistant clocks are better suited to dryer climates, or on a sheltered patio. If you live in a climate like the Northwestern United states, or the UK you will want to have a fully water proof weather resistant outdoor-clock. They are not hard to find.
In the living room, traditional styles rule the day, but traditional styles have been taken to all new levels. With an array of natural and man made materials all types. styles from the past, present and future can be echoed with ease, and at reasonable prices. Very large clocks with roman numeral faces can make a dramatic statement over the fireplace or fill a huge undecorated space on a wall that needs breaking up. Mirrored backgrounds clocks are also popular for the living room. A tall, elegant wall clock with chimes and a pendulum is also a popular choice.
Another type of wall clock that is more subtly eye catching is the wood wall clock. A wooden wall clock can be a wonderfully lovely touch to a room that is very much centered on natural materials. Some wooden clocks are quite plain, while others have a face that is created from matching up different woods to create a whole. A wooden clock might have dark bronze or pale silver hands and you will find that this can be quite striking in its own way. Look at the wood in the room where you want to put the clock and take some time to really consider how a wood clock might look in there. Choosing a good wood clock can give you a great focal point for the room or it can be a wonderful supporting detail.
